INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR NADIA BROWN DAVIS (01)

1.      SWA: Can you please let our audience know who you are.

NADIA: I am Nadia Brown Davis, Author of Seeds In the Mud. I am an Author, Mental Health Professional, Advocate, and Professional Life Coach with extensive experience in Mental Health as well as the Criminal Justice and Court Systems. My mission is to: Empower People through Empathy, Etiquette, Education, Experiences, Encouragement, Enrichment, & Excellence.

2.       SWA:  Did you ever consider writing under a pseudonym?

NADIA: Briefly, but when I could not decide, I let that go.

3.      Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

NADIA: My life has always been unique. I strive to be unlike others. However, I have written a nonfiction book, and even in that, I tried to include random bits of information. I also learned a long time ago that it is difficult to figure out what others want or wanted from me. I concluded what people want from me is none of my business. I decided it was my business to deliver the best that I have to offer, and people can choose to take my best, or they can leave it…

4.     SWA: Where do you get your ideas?

NADIA:    I am very nurturing by nature and have spent years advocating for others. I have also taught clients as well as their families how to advocate for themselves. Many people are unable to advocate for themselves due to a lack of knowledge. Others are just unaware of their rights; they have no idea who to contact for help, while others are just afraid to ask for help. Neither the clients nor the families understand the clients' rights, responsibilities, or advocating. I also found that many mental health patients are sitting in jail, not medicated. The lack of knowledge prompted me to start writing about the information that I thought would benefit others, such as rights, how the prison started, probation, and bail. I included Black History, American History, Criminal Justice, and court systems into one place. I thought that compiling the information would help get it into the hands of more people.

5.     SWA:  What is your writing process like?

NADIA: I try to write like I am having a conversation with someone. I want my style to be unique while relateable.

6.      SWA:  When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

NADIA: I have been writing for years but never had a desire to share those things with the world. I only decided to share when the violence and racist started to spiral out of control. I thought I had insight that I could share. Not many people see the things that I see. I often hear people say, "If I could be a fly on the wall!" Well, when you get to go into the jail or the courtroom or in mom's living room,   you are just that – the fly on the wall. Sometimes I see and hear things that you just would not believe. Current events prompted me to write with the intent of publishing.

7.     SWA:  How long does it take you to write a book?

NADIA: About three months

8.     SWA:  What is your work schedule like when you're writing?

NADIA: My schedule was hectic because when it's warm, outside people commit crimes and go to jail, making it a busy time. However, Corona was getting hot and heavy, so that gave me so downtime.

9.     SWA:  Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?

NADIA: I am well versed in all information in the book. I have worked in the courts and the criminal justice system for 15 years. However, I did check facts in books, on websites, and in some documents. Seeds In the Mud is my attempt to share the importance of knowing your rights, the laws, and the policies and procedures of the criminal justice system.  The book is also me sharing information that I have come to know is NOT shared with defendants and their families. The book is my attempt to share information that can hopefully help people remain on the "right" side of the law. Education is critical to ensure that we avoid falling prey to devices created to destroy us. The book allows you to experience the criminal justice system, Black History,  and America in a new way, truthfully!  We requested the things that we had worked for, earned; they created more situations to suppress and stifle our growth.  We want our legacy released from the lies, tell the truth of lynchings, allow us the rights given to us under the Constitution, and please stop disproportionately taking Black lives for the love of GOD. Explore Jim Crow, Black Codes, "Rocking" Ronald Reagan "Rocked" the Nation with Crack Cocaine, and the corrupt NOT broken Criminal Justice System. Once slaves were free, "they" needed a legal way to disenfranchise Black people. The American Criminal Justice System is the machine created to do so.  It's high time that

10.                        SWA: What do you like to do when you're not writing?

NADIA: When not writing, I publicly speak to educate people of color on their rights, Black history, mental health, the courts, and criminal justice systems. I have a passion for advocacy and social services.  I believe that no matter how big or small, everyone can and should "Do Something!"

11.                        SWA: What does your family think of your writing?

NADIA: They are all so proud.

12.                         SWA:  How many books have you written?

NADIA: Which is your favorite? One, and it’s my absolute favorite.

13.                        SWA:  Do you have any suggestions to help me become a better writer?

NADIA: If so, what are they? Write. Even when you think that you have writer's block, write about something else. Write about your favorite thing. Write about an item you hate. Write about your best day or your worst day. Sometimes when I randomly write, I end up writing right back into my story.
