Growth for a living thing is inevitable, hence, growth is part of change which the great Philosopher of the Miletian school of thought, Heraclitus, says is constant (omnia flux). The problem is not growth or change but where are you growing to or where does your change takes you.
The role of education in the development of a country cannot be over emphasized because it's advantages are in numinous, yet, a country like Nigeria pays less attention to education and gives higher attention to a Television show called BBNAIJA
BBNAIJA as it is called is also known as Big Brother Naija, a reality show in which contestants live in an isolated house and compete for a large cash prize worth $100000 at the end of the show by avoiding being evicted by viewers. According to Google record, the first episode dated 5 March, 2006.
Currently this year, the winner of the BBNAIJA will be going home with Ninety Million Naira (90m) with many other riches whereas the best graduating student from higher institutions in Nigeria goes home with #5,000 or #10,000. In my own institution, first class candidates, go home with nothing from the government which I know that in majority of Nigeria higher institutions, people of such caliber go home with nothing from the government.
A professor in the university gets a monthly salary of #200,000 or #150,000, a lecturer goes home with #70,000, a grade 12 teacher goes home with #50,000. The worst among all these is that some teachers at private schools are paid #10,000 per month.
Instead of investing in education where people are brought out from the morass of unknowingness to the pinnacle of clearity in thought, where people will be thought to be good elite and patriotic individuals that will ignite the fire of lifting the country from living in the dark age of non- scientific innovation and invention, to a level of economic prosperity, the country is channelling a huge resources to a TV show where immoral codes and thoughts, are dispatched to the people.
Instead of exalting academic competitions to such level of high magnitude, instead of encouraging academic individuals, the country chooses to exalt a Show deceiving reality which validates that SCHOOL IS A SCAM as most Nigeria youth will say.
In BBNAIJA show, everything doable is done: people are viewed by thousands of people naked, having sex, kissing, dressing in a way that will increase someone's sexual desire, fight from the inmates are displayed, etc. One then will ask, of what good is this show to Nigeria?
The show remains, from my critical observation, in as much as few privileged rich-men are benefiting from the show and most importantly, a huge amount is given to the government. For such event happening in negligence of the most vital programs that will improve the country, do you think that Nigeria has a good future? We are growing-to-death (a process of maturity which leads to the destruction of the entity involved).
It is high time to became wise, Nigeria. This is your 61 years yet, you are a fool. Wakeup, wakeup and make up for the wrongs you have done: TODAY IS STILL THE BEST DAY.
