LONELINESS AT WORK: CAUSES AND REMEDY


Man, a human being, lives within the society and interacts in the society. Hence, for this reason, Aristotle says that anyone who is not living in a society, is either a beast or a demon. Man not only lives in the society,, but he is a "Homo Faber" (a working being). What makes life lively, some opine is the fact that man is not alone in the world and that man finds fulfillment in relating to other people. When one could not find fulfillment in these things, it becomes a problem which is psychological. The victim is Lonely.


Nevertheless, the concept LONELY means unhappy because you have no friends or people to talk to or a situation, a period of time of sadness being spent alone even in the midst of people. Being lonely is different from being alone.

ALONE means without anyone or anything else: not involving or including anyone or anything else, or one being separate from other people.


A philosophical look at the term LONELY, one can find out that a person can be in the midst of people but still have the feeling of being lonely. Nonetheless, research has shown that people who work or do business, amidst being surrounded by people, still have the feeling of loneliness at work. Why? The causes of loneliness are varied. They include social, mental, emotional, and environmental factors. 


Loneliness causes people to feel empty, alone, and unwanted. People who are lonely often crave human contact, but their state of mind makes it more difficult to form connections with other people. There are factors that necessitate the feeling of loneliness at work, such as:


 SOCIALIZATION FOBIA : Some people might be expert in a field,, but they are timid to interact with people or relate with other people. Many issues trigger this attitude, which one of them is the feeling of one being inferior (inferiority complex). Although the person is an expert,, but he feels he is not good enough compared to other experts in the field. This, however, makes him feel dejected and cannot be compared to others. He feels that he is unequal to them.


Other factors which give impetus to inferiority complex include:


*Class or grade segregation

*Racism 

*Tribalism 

*Cultural chauvinism

*Intellectual capability 

*Hierarchy of office

*Income rate

*Family background


It is also good to note that it is not only forces from external arena that causes one to feel lonely at work: there are also internal factors coming from the end of the person feeling lonely. Such internal factor includes:


*Jealousy

*Greedy 

*The person might be a sadist, etc.


When the feeling of being lonely at work beholds an employee, the implication is that he/she will be uncomfortable, and the environment will be uncondusive and inhabitable to the employee. Cooperation needed at work will be gone, giving rise to lack of team work. This therefore calls immediate attention to the matter of loneliness at work.

For loneliness at work to be avoided, the following must be considered:


1. The owners and managers of different organizations should see that emphasis are not laid much on either grade, hierarchy of office, tribe, race, or any of the factors aforesaid that leads to the feeling of being lonely at work, but emphasis should be based on team work and one bringing his expertise for the growth of the organization. All should be seen as human being with dignity and with intrinsic value. 


2. One should also be positive to oneself and positive in relating with others. Do not give yourself the idea that you are inferior. This is because it is normally said that what one thinks of himself is what others think of him. If you are optimistic about yourself, positive things will come to you.


3. One ought to be happy when good things happen to someone and also be contented with oneself. The progress of other people should be the source of one's joy and in this way, good things will also come to you.

Conclusion

In a nutshell, do not give anything the chance to send you into a state of being lonely at work because a place of work suppose to be a place of socialization. One ought to try and avoid the above factors aforementioned that give rise to Loneliness at work. Stay positive and keep the mind healthy and happy, it leads to long life.
